Brain Bowl Team Heads to the Santa Fe Open and South Florida NAQT Sectionals

Two Brain Bowl teams are heading to Gainesville on Friday, Jan. 12 for Saturday’s Santa Fe Open being held at Santa Fe College. They will face teams from the College of Central Florida, Florida Gateway, Santa Fe College, Tallahassee Community College, the University of Central Florida, the University of Florida, and State College of Florida, Manatee/Sarasota.

On Saturday, Jan. 20, SFSC’s Brain Bowl team is participating in the South Florida National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) Sectionals being held at State College of Florida, Manatee/Sarasota. If members of the team win a bid at this tournament, they head to the NAQT Community College Championship Tournament being held in Chicago, March 23-24.

The SFSC Brain Bowl team members are Rubi Barajas (DeSoto), Emily Beard (DeSoto), Carolina Bowden (DeSoto), Brandon Brignoni (Highlands), Mathew Daniel (DeSoto), Joshua Gurll (Highlands), Juan Perez (DeSoto), and Brian Simpson (Highlands). Coaches are Dr. Brian Deery, (assistant coach), Lena Phelps, and David Zoerb.

Team members meet twice a week at the DeSoto and Highlands campuses for practice, depending on class schedules of coaches and players.
