Adjunct Instructor Scores Article in Music Publication

Zach Thompson

Zachary Thompson, an SFSC adjunct instructor who teaches MUL 2010 Music Appreciation, published an article in the February/March 2018 edition of Florida Music Director. The article is “Reflections on an Ensemble Performance at a Music Conference.” Florida Music Director is a publication of the Florida Music Education Association (FMEA) and distributed to music instructors from pre-kindergarten through college level.

His other job is at Sebring High School, teaching world music and International Baccalaureate music, in addition to conducting five choirs at the school.

Thompson was prompted to write the article based on his recent experience of preparing to perform during a prestigious concert. “The varsity choir for Sebring High School was selected to perform at the 2018 FMEA President’s Concert on Jan. 10,” he said. “For this concert, one choir, one band, and one orchestra are selected to perform. So I wrote the article about my experience of applying to have my choir perform at that concert. I discussed my experience of selecting the music, talking with the composers of the music, the rehearsal process, and the things we did the day we arrived, such as the sound check and having the performance professionally recorded to be a memorable experience for the students.”

Thompson composes his own music as well. Two of his pieces were performed at the last two last winter concerts at Sebring High School, and one of his arrangements was performed by the women’s choir at his alma mater, Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania. And if you’d like to see him in action, Thompson is also the music director at St. Agnes Episcopal Church in Sebring.
