Today We Celebrate ‘Old Glory’

June 14, 2018. Happy Flag Day. Learn About Flag Day.Today, Americans commemorate Flag Day. But what makes this national observance different than other patriotic holidays – like Independence Day?

Flag Day is the birthday of the American flag. On June 14, 1777, the second Continental Congress authorized the “Stars and Stripes” to be the official American flag. On June 14, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that established June 14 as Flag Day, and 1949 President Harry Truman signed an Act of Congress establishing June 14 as National Flag Day.

Although some historians think the story that Betsy Ross designed the first American flag could be a tall tale, the symbolism of the design is clear. The original flag had 13 stripes and 13 stars, representing the original 13 colonies, with the color red reflecting hardiness and value, white symbolizing purity and innocence, and blue symbolizing vigilance, perseverance and justice. The stars formed a circle, signifying that the union of states formed a new American constellation. As more territories joined the republic, the flag evolved into its present design: 13 stripes and nine rows containing 50 stars.

But Flag Day is not a federal holiday, which means that for the government (and everyone else), June 14 is business as usual.

Please take a moment to salute Old Glory on her 241st birthday and reflect on the ideals she represents. Happy Flag Day!
