Remembering George P. Floyd

Dear Colleagues,

As many of you know, South Florida State College had a connection to Mr. George P. Floyd. When it was officially verified and we were sure that the George Floyd in the reports was the same George P. Floyd who attended SFCC, I released this statement to the public:

“Officials at South Florida State College confirmed that George P. Floyd attended South Florida Community College from 1993 to 1995. During his time as a student, he was a member of the Panther basketball team in the fall of 1994 and the spring of 1995.”

At South Florida State College, our core values reflect our dedication to unity and equality. We embrace cultural diversity, inclusiveness, and mutual respect. We will continue to promote these values as a higher education institution dedicated to changing lives through our product—the curriculum. We will stand firm on what is right and fair, and practice inclusion, diversity, and equity in our ongoing mission to serve.

Compassion, kindness, empathy and love are also powerful forces. They are easier to implement and seldom do they cause any major disruption. I opt for open conversations to clarify injustices, and I do believe in the power of our national democracy, which tolerates opposing viewpoints.

Let me be clear. Mr. Floyd did not deserve the treatment he was given. At the same time, the violence that ensued following his death is also wrong. We share a bond with Mr. Floyd as he was a Panther and a part of our community.  At SFSC, we will continue to treat every individual with dignity and respect. If there is any good that comes out of this tragedy, let it be a lawful and respectful appreciation to open communication and a tolerance for difference. Diversity is a virtue that we proudly display. Through this tragedy I believe we can emerge stronger and united in a covenant to live what it means to be socially just.

We value all of our students and all of our alums. In the upcoming weeks, we will find a meaningful way to recognize the memory of George P. Floyd. You will be informed how this will occur.

Thank you for your service to SFSC. I appreciate everyone associated with this outstanding institution.
