AI in Higher Education: Harnessing the Future, Navigating the Challenges

Dr. Christopher van der Kaay, dean of institutional effectiveness, and Dr. Brent Ferns, dean of applied sciences and technologies, delivered a presentation on artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education at the Florida College System (FCS) Joint Councils meeting in Orlando on Wednesday, Oct. 12. Drs. van der Kaay and Ferns highlighted the potential and ethical challenges associated with the increasingly widespread adoption of AI technologies in education. They provided an overview of AI applications that could enhance teaching and learning, such as using generative AI to create customized educational content and simulations. They also emphasized the need for thoughtful integration of AI, ensuring technologies augment rather than replace human roles.

In addition, Drs. van der Kaay and Ferns reviewed considerations around data privacy, accountability, and transparency in AI systems. They advocated for proactive planning and policies to steer strategic direction with AI implementation. Fostering broader AI literacy through professional development and academic integration was recommended. Overall, the presentation stimulated meaningful conversations around harnessing the power of AI in higher education while navigating associated risks and complexities.
