On Wednesday, June 17, SFSC Gives Back wrapped up for the academic year with a pizza party in thanks to the 43 SFSC employees who volunteered their time. Between October 2024 and April 2025, SFSC Gives Back participants visited 12 sites in DeSoto, Hardee, and Highlands counties to provide assistance to organizations and individuals in need. Some of the projects they worked on were painting and sprucing up Habitat for Humanity’s retail store; providing gardening and yard clean up for a veteran; reading books with elementary school children; packing and loading a truckload of medical supplies bound for Africa; preparing meals, stocking the pantry, and organizing the thrift store for Hands for Homeless. These are only a few of the selfless assignments the volunteers took on in our communities.

“The goal of SFSC Gives Back was to provide an opportunity for our faculty and staff to give back to the communities that we live, work, and play, by going off campus together as a team to make a difference,” said Anastasia Fuchser, who coordinated the effort and works in the Office of Institutional Advancement and Alumni Development. “Volunteering in one’s community nurtures social connections, improves mental and physical health, improves personal and professional skills, and encourages a stronger sense of community. One SFSC volunteer said that it was worthwhile to ‘see the appreciation on the recipient’s face when the team went above and beyond their expectations.’

“Thank you to all of the SFSC volunteers who stepped up to make an impact,” Fuchser said. “The SFSC Gives Back program was full of fun, connections, and definitely made an impact. We look forward to seeing this program continue to grow and thrive.”
