Faculty Earn Quality Matters Awards

During the Monday, Aug. 11 Convocation program, Carleigh Okwali, director of SFSC’s Center for Innovative Teaching, presented four instructors with Quality Matters Awards. They were Davida Austin, Rasheena Morris James, Anne Moore, and Lorrie Schumard.

According to Okwali, “Quality Matters is a nationally recognized benchmark for assuring the quality of online and hybrid courses. It involves a rigorous peer-review process that focuses on course design standards to enhance student learning and success. These faculty members spent a significant amount of time working on their courses to meet an 85% or higher on the Quality Matters Higher Education 7th Edition rubric. It is a rigorous process that subjects them to a peer-review process of three certified reviewers.”

The rubric focuses on eight key areas:

  1. Course Overview and Introduction
  2. Learning Objectives (Competencies)
  3. Assessment and Measurement
  4. Instructional Materials
  5. Learning Activities and Learner Interaction
  6. Course Technology
  7. Learner Support
  8. Accessibility and Usability
