During the Florida Nursing Students Association (FNSA) Convention in Kissimmee, Fla., Oct. 29-30, the SFSC Student Nurses Association (SNA) was presented with several awards. The FNSA is a student-run organization that represents over 5,000 nursing students across Florida.

The SFSC students returned to campus after having earned the following recognitions:

  • SFSC Nursing student, Colton Denby, won the position on the FNSA board as Region 4 Director.
  • The Diamond Chapter Award: This prestigious award recognizes an FNSA chapter for excellence in education, service, advocacy, and leadership throughout the last year. To be eligible, chapters must be members of FNSA and NSNA, submit an annual report and a portfolio of activities, and participate in FNSA events and initiatives.
  • The Chapter Website Award: The website award is given to a Florida chapter that effectively uses its website to promote its activities and provide information, recognizing excellence in areas like social media presence, growth, and the dissemination of information. It’s part of a broader award system that evaluates chapters on their overall performance in education, service, advocacy, and leadership.
  • The Host School Award is based on the student organization’s ability to successfully host the event. The college or university must demonstrate the capacity to organize and provide resources for convention attendees. Host school volunteers assist with various convention activities such as setting up and breakdown of events, serve as ushers/pages in the House of Delegates meetings, and other logistical support as directed by the convention schedule.
  • The Pennies PRN Award: SFSC’s chapter raised the most funds of all the colleges in Florida to donate to the FNSA to assist with scholarship funds.
  • SFSC nursing student, Mya Ervin, one of local Student Nurses Association officers, applied for and won the Willa Fuller Scholarship from the FNSA.

According to Candy Jones, SFSC Nursing instructor and SNA advisor, “Participation in the Florida Nursing Students Association convention and its activities is essential for our local Student Nurses Association members, as it provides valuable professional development, networking opportunities, leadership growth, and advocacy experience. These opportunities help bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice, better preparing students for successful careers in nursing.”
