Students studying for careers in the health sciences at South Florida State College received nearly $20,000 in scholarships in December.

The scholarships went to students in SFSC’s nursing, dental education, radiography, and emergency medical services programs.

The funding for the scholarships comes from the Florida College System Foundation as part of a partnership with Florida Blue, the state’s leading health insurer.

“Because of Florida Blue’s commitment to education, SFSC can ensure students studying toward careers in the health sciences will have the resources they need to complete their programs,” said Jamie Bateman, SFSC’s executive director for institutional advancement. “This year we will award $17,785 to students who will soon start careers in nursing, dental care, radiography, and emergency medical services—all of which play a critical role in keeping our community safe and healthy.”

The Tallahassee-based foundation solicits gifts and donations from corporations and individuals for distribution to Florida’s 28 community and state colleges. SFSC has received scholarships for allied health students since 2006. The SFSC Foundation provided a 50 percent match to draw down the funding.

“This year’s scholarships will go to 25 health sciences students,” said Rebecca Sroda, SFSC’s dean of health sciences. “Program managers selected students using a set of criteria, with preference given to students from populations underrepresented in the workforce. Students can use the scholarship for tuition, lab fees, and, textbooks. For some of our students, this will be the only financial assistance they receive.”
