Maxing Out on Annual Leave at Year’s End

Are you reaching the maximum yearly amount of vacation (annual) leave to carry over into 2017?

If you’re not sure, review SFSC Procedure 5130 – Leaves of Absence/Vacation Leave (II.D.).  If you are, don’t worry.  Any hours accumulated over the maximum amount in December of any year will be placed in a special “carry-over” sick leave account.  This account has no payout value at retirement or other separation from the college, but it will automatically be used first to cover an absence due to sick or personal leave before deducting any hours from your regular sick leave accrual account.   Remember that both annual leave and sick regular leave can accumulate toward a nice payout upon retirement.

Here are a few important factors to remember around the holidays:

  • Full-time employees must be present or in a paid leave status the day before and the day after a holiday to receive holiday pay.
  • Annual leave and personal leave must be requested and approved in advance.

Please review the SFSC policies and procedures, and make sure you are using your leave benefits appropriately.  Human Resources staff will be happy to explain further and answer any questions you may have.
